I assisted Leprechaun Stables in rehabilitating horses and aiding them on their journey to find a home that will care for them despite their, at times, rough past. The organization hopes to increase awareness of neglected horses and promote the proper care and treatment of our equine partners. It is a fairly new operation which aids horses who are found abandoned or aids people who can no longer afford to care for or have their horses.
While helping the stable I learned many valuable lessons on horse care that I had never known before despite my numerous years of experience with horses. I learned how to be patient with them and allow them to make decisions for themselves instead of us forcing them to do what we want them to do. Leprechaun Stables prides themselves in taking a natural approach to horse handling, and I definitely learned new ways of caring and handling horses that I will use when handling my own horses.
The experience definitely opened my eyes to the growing problem of neglected and abandoned horses and how we should do more to aid them. These horses have been abused or neglected and deserve to be happy for the remainder of their lives. I believe more people should be aware of what these horses have gone through and should aid the organizations which help these horses.
This stable definitely aids in the growing number of abandoned and neglected horses. Numerous horses are disposed of, especially if they are injured and cannot work or show any longer. This stable allows for these unwanted horses to have a safe haven in which they will be treated with the utmost care and respect.
The root of this issue is definitely people not understanding what it take to properly care for horses. They require a lot of hard work and patience and the general population does not understand this which leads to these horses becoming unwanted. I definitely think that the community should step up in aiding these horses and that we should educate the public about this growing epidemic.
Overall, the experience was extremely enjoyable and I would go back to care for the horses again.
