Syria's Hour

To leave one’s home and comfort is difficult for most average people, but when home becomes hell, abandoning it for safety and a fresh start is nothing short of common sense. The tattered nation of Syria has had refugees abandoning their former homes to surrounding nations since early 2011. Journalists such as “Washington Post’s Kevin Sullivan” have detailed the atrocities the refugees faced and how their lives are forever effected. While journalists such as Julie Bosman and Alex Altman detail the struggles that happen when trying to relocate the refugees to new homes especially in the U.S. and made even worse with the panic spread from ISIS bombings.
What all of them are trying to convey with their articles is “the time to help Syrians is now”. With so many European countries continuously taking on more and more Syrian refugees even with the bombings that have happened, The U.S. is still cowering away from the task of helping these people due to the constant ignorant beliefs that the refugees are terrorists, and with the already overburdened Europe still taking on so many refugees, there really isn’t room for this ignorance that is letting many innocent people who are trying to escape to something better, die.
Unfortunately, with people like Governor Rick Snyder and Presidential candidate Donald Trump stirring the fear of U.S. citizens to earn better ratings for the polls, it becomes difficult to convince a nation to accept this challenge. Both Bosman and Altman clearly describe how stringent the U.S. already is about the refugee acceptance process but they fail to mention the easy access any terrorist has to the U.S. with a simple tourist visa, making the stringency and panic even more idiotic.
What needs to be done is simple, The U.S. needs to get its act together and start doing what it boasts “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door! –Emma Lazarus”. The people of Syria need our help, give it to them.
