Service for a Good Life

Community service is required of most highschool students. We must give back to our community, for a certain amount of hours, in order to graduate or attain certain scholarships. According to Malcolm Gladwell, youth involvement has decreased and instead has turned to social media instead of physical involvement to spread awareness. However, I do not think that this is neccessarily a bad thing. Through the use of social media on can spread a message from all across the country or all around the world. People who would otherwise not know about a matter ar made aware through posts and shares. This does not decrease involvement in matters in anyway since rallies can be formulated through social media and have been formulated using social media.

I do not believe that youth involvement has decreased at all. I simply believe that the haven't been as many monumental civil rights issues as there were before. Gladwell mentions sit-ins and boycotts in a time where there was a radical divide within American society. The divide isn't as prevalent now, however, there are certain issues that have been brewing in the backround lately, such as police shootings and the rising hate that has been emerging against certain religions or ethnicities. With the increasing hate within society there have been movements and protests formulated that oppose the rising negative emotions. All these counter Gladwell's argument of a lack of youth involvement.

Younger people are also required to involve themselves in their community. Whether it involves picking up trash or helping animals at shelters, youths are participating within the community in order to recieve the hours needed to graduate or get certain scholarships. Subsequently, the communty benefits from the involvement of the younger generations, and there has been no real decline in how many younger people participate in the community.
