Latinos of America

The Latinos of America presentation opens one’s eyes to the fact that many minorities suffered great discrimination and hate. In school, we mainly learn of the turmoil that African Americans underwent. We learn of their civil rights leaders and the accomplishments that they had achieved towards equal rights toward their own people. However, we do not learn of the struggles that other minorities had, and in some cases still do, endure.

The presentation mainly discussed the struggles of Mexican Americans and the abuse that they experienced while working the fields. It discussed the lack of pay, grueling amounts of labor, and horrid working conditions that they had to suffer with. It also discussed the two main leaders of the Mexican working strikes, Ceasar Chavez and Dolores Muerta, and other monumental moments in history for Mexican Americans; such as the struggle to improve their education through walk outs and peaceful strikes, yet being met with violence at their attempts to better their lives.

Overall, the presentation was very moving and eye-opening. I realized that even though it is not discussed or taught to the extent that African American movements are, many minorities had to undergo the hate and prejudice that were placed on them by the leading minorities.
